Ontario Secondary School Literacy Requirements

At Thornhill High School, part of the Gateway Education Group, we ensure every student receives the support and resources needed to meet the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) literacy requirements. Our programs align with Ontario Ministry of Education standards, blending flexibility, expertise, and personalized guidance to empower student success.

Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT)

All students must meet the provincial literacy standard to graduate.

Key Details

  • Test Administration:

    • Administered by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO).

    • Typically taken in Grade 10 (deferrals available in consultation with the principal).

    • Thornhill High School organizes test sessions on-campus for students with an Ontario Student Record (OSR) held here.

    • Students may write at alternative locations per Ministry guidelines (e.g., another inspected school).

  • Retakes & Eligibility:

    • Unsuccessful students may retake the test in subsequent years.

    • After two unsuccessful attempts, students become eligible for the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC).

  • Exemptions:

    • Only granted if a student’s support plan confirms they are not pursuing an OSSD.

    • Decisions made by the principal in collaboration with parents/guardians.
